The French Revolution did not do much for the status of women. Women were still expected to be submissive to their husbands.
Some factions in the Church, for example, resisting the winds of change of the French Revolution, used a passage from the writings of St. Paul to reinforce the status quo: "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord, for the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, for he is the savior of the body." (Ephesians 5.22-24)
